The Return to Self
The best “thank-you’s” I get as a counsellor from my clients are the ones that say, “thank you for getting me back to myself.” While I love hearing that, I am quick to let those clients know that they themselves did the bulk of the work and I was just here to guide them on their journey.
Losing ourselves, our authentic selves, can be the precursor to disease. In previous posts I have examined how anxiety, depression and stress can trigger diseases, especially, but not only, autoimmune diseases. Anxiety, depression and stress are among the first signs that we have lost our authentic self. If we then continue on ignoring those signs, chancse are good we will find ourselves afflicted with disease, which is the harshest of teachers.
Looking back on my own journey with multiple sclerosis, the warning signs were there long before the diagnosis came down. Are you experiencing warning signs like stress, anxiety or depression now? Can you “sit down” with those feelings and examine what they are warning you about? What changes to your life/lifestyle/environment should you be considering in order to avoid these early warnings growing into full disease?
